Reviewing School Wide Social Emotional Learning & Literacy Data: Forward Planning

Our September 22nd Professional Development focused on our reviewing school wide SEL and Literacy data (Social Emotional Learning-CASEL surveys (completed in June 2025) and reading assessments (completed in September 2025).

Grade groups met in teams to discuss patterns and plan ways to build belonging, strengthen literacy skills and co-plan for Truth and Reconciliation Day. See more detailed information below.

We explored the 4 Corners SEL strategy using a collection of images as metaphors and considered how our worldviews shape our work as educators:

SEL:

What do we Notice?

We have worked on social awareness for the past three years. We worked specifically on self-regulation, interoception and developing SEL routines in classroom. We noticed that there was still work to do w regulation during outside play. We recognize some of this is developmental. We had a school wide focus on kindness, building community through identity with I am From Poems.

OUR STUDENT DATA SHOWS A 10% INCREASE IN EMPATHY…This is something to celebrate!

What’s next?

As we continue to focus on building belonging, we will look for more ways for students to share their identity, culture and stories. Our school wide heartifact inquiry work, is an example of how story sharing can help build connection.

See our ACTION post titled-Heartifact-Building Community.

Reviewing Reading Assessment Data (September 2025):

We worked in grade groups to review reading assessment data, identify emergent trends and patterns. We compared our new findings to the spring reading assessment data completed with the support of Faye Brownlie. Our grade groups found many similarities to our key focus areas.

Grade groups spent the last part of the day working together to plan literacy focused lessons for Truth and Reconciliation Day using strategies to support skills identified in reading assessment data. Every grade band committed to lesson planning using our newly updated Indigenous library collection.
